New technologies are required to protect the marine environment
As a provider of application-oriented research and development services, the ttz Bremerhaven founded the maritime network MS INNOVATION together with companies from the maritime industry and the green technologies sector. The network aims at developing innovative and applied environmental technologies for the maritime industry.
Even though the potential fields of application are manifold, MS INNOVATION focuses in the first project phase on water treatment on board ocean-going and inland vessels: ballast, bilge, drinking, swimming-pool, grey, black and process water require optimised process management and more efficient treatment technologies in order to protect humans and the environment.
In a second step, MS INNOVATION aims at realising holistic system analyses and optimisations in order to reduce the energy use of ships and thus to decrease the related emissions, especially carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) and sulphur oxides (SOₓ).
The activities of MS INNOVATION are addressed to ship owners, naval architects, shipyards, technology / component suppliers, (maritime) engineering consultants, port operators, offshore enterprises, research institutes, government agencies and industry associations. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are often prevented from own research activities by limited resources with regards to financial and human resources as well as an insufficient infrastructure. With the help of MS INNOVATION, SMEs will be integrated in a competence network in order to gain application-oriented research and technology support.
MS INNOVATION is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology within the framework of the Central Innovation Programme for SMEs (ZIM), funding module Networks (ZIM-NEMO). The project’s lead partner is the VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH which is based in Berlin.
The ZIM-NEMO programme provides small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) a neutral networking platform to get in contact with adequate market partners, scientists, (public) authorities and organisations. Thus, ZIM-NEMO is a perfect funding instrument to enhance active communication and (inter)action along the maritime supply chain in order to develop and implement innovative environmental technologies on board of vessels.
